Our special tribute to Professor Issa Laye Thiaw : 1943 - 10th September 2017 (broadcast on 11th September 2017)

It is with great regret that the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC) and Seereer Radio find themselves having to announce the passing of our colleague and old friend Professor Issa Laye Thiaw. Professor Issa Laye Thiaw, also known as Mbañik Caw (his Seereer name, Thiaw is spelled Caw in Seereer) was a brilliant historian and author, and a very proud Seereer and African. A true guardian of Seereer tradition, religion, culture and ethics. He was a gifted and wise man who was always generous with his knowledge and time. The Seereer Community, the Senegambian community, and Africa have lost a great man.

Following the passing of our colleague and uncle - Professor Issa Laye Thiaw on Sunday, 10th September 2017 in Senegal, The Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio teams as well as Radio Ndef Leng Diourbel 96.4 FM came together to pay a special tribute to Professor Issa Laye Thiaw.  This two hour tribute replaced the regular  Open Mike programme usually presented by Mamadou Fall. Folloiwng his passing, The Seereer Centre, Seereer Radio, Seereer Heritage Press and their teams issued a joint tribute published on Seereer Radio's website. You can read the full tribute by visiing this link if you are using a computer or visiting this website (www.seereerpodcast.org). Alternatively,  you can  check the  website links below or visit Seereer Radio's website (Schedule --> Presenters --> Obituary of Issa Laye Thiaw).

Professor Issa Laye Thiaw was not just a proud member of the SRC and Seereer Radio, but a family. We the Seereer and Senegambian community owe it to this great man to help support his works and family by buying his book La femme Seereer which is filled with great information as anyone who have read the book can attest to. We hope when the time comes for us to ask for the community's support in bringing to life the SRCTIW (The Seereer Resource Centre and The Temple of Initiated Women) project, the Seereer community, other Senegambians, Africans and those from the Diaspora will rally behind us and help us preserve the legacy of this man. For those who knew him, this project has been one of his best wishes that he wanted to give to the Seereer, Senegambian, African and those the Diaspora who were separated from their motherland due to the horrible history of slavery. It is sad that he will not be here to witness the completion of this project, but we can unite and ensure that one of his greatest wishes comes to fruition.

The Seereer Resource Centre, Seereer Radio, Seereer Heritage Press,  Tamsier JoofDemba SeneMamadou FallDimlé Sène and all team members of the SRC and Seereer Radio would like to offer their heartfelt and sincere condolences to his family and friends. This is a huge lost as expressed by colleagues.

Obituary of Fatou Gueye

Towards the end of this show, the celebratory mood changed when we found out that the legendary Fatou Gueye has passed away. Laity Sene, who was co-presenting this show was called during the live broadcast to be told that Fatou has passed away. Instead of telling his co-presenters, he handed over to his wife to join us on the broadcast as he went straight to the house of Fatou Gueye, but before leaving told his wife Hawa not to tell the Seereer Radio team until the end of the show so not to spoil celebratory mood. Hawa kept to her promise and didn't tell the co-presenters about the sad news until towards the end of the show. The passing of Fatou Gueye was broadcast live on Seereer Radio to everyone's shock and disbelief. With regret, this sad news was first broken on Seereer Radio. On Friday, 6th January 2017 at 14:24, the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC) and Seereer Radio issued a joint tribute about the sad passing of Fatou Gueye on their Facebook pages. See below:

"The Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio  are sad to announce the passing of the legendary Fatou Gueye, who sadly passed away yesterday. The sad news was broken live on Seereer Radio's first anniversary special programme last night.

Fatou Gueye was a brilliant artist who worked deligently over the years to preserve and promote Seereer and Senegambian cultural heritage and identity. She was a highly talented artist with a long career especially within the Nguel. Only about a month ago, Seereer Radio's Cosaan Seereer team were planning to have her on the Cosaan Seereer Show, and arrangements were being made to accommodate that.

The Seereer and Senegambian community have lost a great artist and a wonderful human being. The SRC and Seereer Radio teams would like to offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. May her beautiful soul rest in perfect peace.

Goliŋ."
